Twelve

DJ made her way out of the kitchen, out the back door, and over to the side of the stables with her head high and her steps sure and steady.

And then she lost it.

Crap. She leaned against the wood paneling of the barn, wrapped her arms around her stomach, and tapped her head against the wall.

What had just happened? Had she really just spent a whole hour flirting with Brent Kane, one of country music’s most sought after bachelors, and its most notorious womanizer? Her lips still tingled where they’d met with Brent's. She touched her fingers to her mouth, noticed herself trembling, then got pissed off and shoved her hands into the pockets of her jean cut-offs.

She glanced around to make sure there were no eye-witnesses to her complete weak-kneed moment. She’d spent years gaining the respect of her crew. Most ranch hands came with the preconceived notion that a woman couldn’t run a successful ranch and that it was beneath them to take orders from a female boss. She fought their chauvinism by being a tough as nails, no nonsense boss, who did her best to treat everyone fairly. The last thing she needed was for one of them to see her flustered over a pretend kiss and some flirtation.

DJ made her way into the cooler shade of the stables and, out of habit, added to the running check list in her mind of all the things she needed to do. The ranch was quiet for this time of day. It was one of those rare occurrences when things seemed to be going smoothly and they’d gotten on top of most of the chores. She sauntered up to the far stall and made kissing noises to the mare inside. The old quarter horse lifted her head and trotted over to her owner. DJ rubbed Queenie’s rough nose between her hands and immediately felt a sense of calm steal over her. The coppery-red sorrel had been the first horse DJ’s parent’s had bought for her, and now, even though Queenie was too old to be much use around the ranch, DJ had never considered getting rid of her. The tired brown eyes looked up at DJ as if begging for a treat. With her pockets empty, DJ sighed and scratched between Queenie’s ears instead. Was this enough? Were her ranch and horses enough? Or was there something more?

Every moment of every day had always been about her ranch, her horses. She told herself that she couldn’t afford to flirt or spend prime daylight hours talking about F.U.N with some blond, too-handsome-for-his-own-good superstar just because she’d caught his interest for a hot second.

But still, something that Brent had said resonated with her. It was the same thing that Derrek would ride her about. She was too young to work herself into the grave. She saw a flash of what her life would look like in thirty years. She’d be all alone and old, waking up to realize that life had passed her by and all she had to show for it was some great horses and a dusty old ranch.
